Course Introduction
Urbanization is accelerating globally, creating unprecedented challenges and opportunities for cities, municipalities, metropolitan authorities, and urban development agencies. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have become indispensable tools for understanding urban dynamics, managing infrastructure, optimizing land use, and supporting evidence-based planning. This course provides comprehensive knowledge and practical skills in applying GIS technologies to urban planning and smart city development initiatives. Participants will learn how spatial data and geospatial analytics can improve urban governance, service delivery, sustainability, resilience, and quality of life for urban populations.
Modern cities generate vast amounts of spatial and non-spatial data through transportation systems, utilities, sensors, mobile devices, public services, and digital platforms. Smart city frameworks leverage these datasets to improve operational efficiency, infrastructure management, environmental sustainability, and citizen engagement.
