Course Introduction

Social protection systems are increasingly relying on data-driven approaches to identify vulnerable populations and deliver targeted support. This course introduces participants to the use of GIS in mapping vulnerability, poverty dynamics, and social protection needs across diverse geographic and demographic contexts.

The course explores how spatial data can integrate socioeconomic indicators, household surveys, demographic trends, and service access information to identify vulnerable groups. Participants will learn how GIS supports evidence-based targeting of welfare programs and equitable resource distribution.

A strong emphasis is placed on vulnerability mapping techniques, including spatial analysis of poverty, food insecurity, displacement, health risks, and disaster exposure. Participants will examine how geospatial tools help governments and organizations prioritize interventions where they are most needed.

The program also covers the role of GIS in designing, monitoring, and evaluating social protection programs such as cash transfers, food aid distribution, and health assistance. Participants will understand how spatial systems improve transparency, efficiency, and accountability in social welfare delivery.

Emerging technologies such as AI-based vulnerability prediction models, mobile data collection systems, and real-time poverty mapping dashboards are also explored. These tools enhance the precision and responsiveness of social protection systems in dynamic environments.

Ultimately, the course equips participants with advanced geospatial skills to design and implement vulnerability mapping systems that strengthen social protection programs and improve equity in development planning.

Duration
5 days
