Introduction

The integration of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in agriculture has transformed how farmers, agribusinesses, and policymakers optimize food production and sustainability. GIS provides real-time insights on soil conditions, crop health, water use efficiency, and weather patterns, enabling data-driven farming practices.

This course offers a comprehensive exploration of GIS applications in smart agriculture, focusing on precision farming, resource optimization, and environmental conservation. Participants will learn how to leverage geospatial technologies to improve productivity, reduce costs, and mitigate risks associated with climate change and resource scarcity.

Beyond the farm gate, the course highlights the importance of GIS in supply chain traceability. As global food systems face increasing demands for transparency, GIS helps stakeholders monitor, document, and verify agricultural produce from farm to market. This ensures compliance with food safety regulations, quality standards, and consumer demands.

The course covers both technical and policy-oriented perspectives, combining training in GIS software, remote sensing, and spatial analysis with discussions on food security, sustainability, and digital transformation in agriculture.

Through hands-on exercises, participants will develop practical skills in mapping, analyzing, and visualizing agricultural data, while also learning how to build traceability frameworks that support accountability and competitiveness in global food markets.

By the end of the course, learners will be equipped to design and implement GIS-driven strategies for sustainable agriculture and resilient supply chains, enhancing decision-making, profitability, and environmental stewardship.
