Course Introduction

Rapid urbanization, climate change, and infrastructure degradation are increasing the need for resilient housing systems and well-planned urban redevelopment strategies. This course introduces participants to the application of GIS in designing, assessing, and managing resilient housing and sustainable urban regeneration projects in diverse city environments.

The course explores how GIS integrates spatial data on housing density, land use, infrastructure quality, and environmental risk to support informed urban redevelopment planning. Participants will learn how to identify vulnerable housing areas, informal settlements, and infrastructure deficits using geospatial analysis techniques.

A strong emphasis is placed on urban resilience planning, where GIS is used to assess exposure to hazards such as flooding, heatwaves, earthquakes, and landslides. Participants will examine how spatial models support safer housing design, relocation planning, and risk-sensitive urban development strategies.

The program also highlights redevelopment frameworks that use GIS to guide urban renewal, slum upgrading, and infrastructure modernization. Participants will understand how spatial intelligence supports equitable land allocation, zoning reforms, and sustainable housing investments.

Emerging technologies such as 3D GIS modeling, digital twins, and AI-driven urban simulations are also covered. These tools allow planners to visualize redevelopment scenarios, optimize land use, and predict long-term urban growth patterns with greater precision.

Ultimately, the course equips participants with advanced geospatial skills to design resilient housing systems and manage urban redevelopment projects that are sustainable, inclusive, and climate-adaptive.
