Course Introduction

Resettlement and livelihood restoration are critical components of development projects, particularly in infrastructure expansion, urban redevelopment, mining, and conservation initiatives. GIS plays a vital role in identifying affected populations, mapping displacement impacts, and designing equitable resettlement plans that minimize social and economic disruption.

This course provides a comprehensive understanding of how GIS supports resettlement planning processes by integrating spatial data, socio-economic indicators, and infrastructure datasets. Participants will learn how to assess land acquisition impacts and develop evidence-based relocation strategies.

The training emphasizes livelihood restoration planning, focusing on how GIS can be used to analyze income sources, employment patterns, agricultural dependencies, and community resources. This enables planners to design sustainable livelihood recovery programs.

Participants will explore methods for mapping vulnerable populations, identifying relocation sites, and evaluating accessibility to services such as education, healthcare, and markets. Spatial analysis techniques will be applied to ensure fair and inclusive resettlement outcomes.

Advanced modules introduce the use of remote sensing, participatory GIS, and mobile data collection tools to enhance stakeholder engagement and transparency in resettlement planning processes. These tools support accurate and participatory decision-making.

By the end of the course, learners will be able to design GIS-based resettlement plans, assess livelihood impacts, and support sustainable rehabilitation strategies aligned with international safeguard standards and development policies.

Duration
10 days
