Course Introduction

Public utilities such as water supply, electricity, gas, and telecommunications form the backbone of modern urban and rural development systems. Efficient management of these services requires accurate spatial data, and GIS provides a powerful platform for planning, monitoring, and optimization.

Traditional utility management systems often face challenges such as network inefficiencies, service outages, poor infrastructure mapping, and limited integration of spatial data. GIS helps overcome these limitations by enabling visualization and analysis of utility networks in real time.

This course introduces participants to the application of GIS in public utilities management. It focuses on how spatial data can be used to map infrastructure networks, monitor service delivery, and optimize maintenance and expansion of utility systems.

Participants will learn how to integrate utility datasets such as pipelines, power lines, water distribution systems, and telecom infrastructure into GIS platforms. The training emphasizes network analysis and spatial modeling techniques for operational efficiency.

The course also explores modern innovations such as smart grids, IoT-enabled utility monitoring systems, and real-time spatial dashboards. These technologies enhance responsiveness, reduce downtime, and improve service delivery across utility sectors.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to design GIS-based utility management systems, optimize infrastructure networks, and support data-driven decision-making for sustainable and efficient public service delivery.
