Course Introduction

Protected areas such as national parks, wildlife reserves, marine sanctuaries, and conservation landscapes play a critical role in safeguarding biodiversity, ecosystem services, and climate resilience. However, increasing human pressure, land conversion, climate change, and resource conflicts require advanced planning tools to ensure effective management. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) provide powerful capabilities for mapping ecosystems, monitoring threats, and supporting evidence-based protected area planning and management decisions.

This course equips participants with practical and advanced skills in using GIS and remote sensing technologies for protected area design, zoning, conservation planning, and management optimization. Participants will learn how to analyze spatial data to identify biodiversity hotspots, habitat corridors, ecological sensitivities, and human-wildlife conflict zones. The training emphasizes real-world applications that strengthen conservation effectiveness and management efficiency.

Protected area management requires integration of ecological, social, economic, and governance datasets. GIS enables the synthesis of these diverse datasets into actionable spatial intelligence for decision-making. Participants will gain experience in habitat mapping, species distribution analysis, land use pressure assessment, and conservation prioritization using geospatial techniques that support sustainable protected area governance.

The course also focuses on advanced tools such as remote sensing, artificial intelligence, drone mapping, cloud-based GIS platforms, and spatial modeling systems. These technologies enhance the ability to monitor illegal activities, track environmental changes, assess habitat degradation, and evaluate conservation outcomes in near real-time. Participants will learn how digital geospatial systems are transforming modern conservation management.

In addition, the training explores policy frameworks, international conservation agreements, protected area governance models, community-based conservation approaches, and ecosystem-based management strategies. Participants will understand how GIS supports compliance with global biodiversity targets, such as the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), while strengthening adaptive management systems.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to design GIS-based protected area management systems, conduct spatial conservation analysis, support ecological monitoring, and develop management strategies for biodiversity protection. They will be fully equipped to contribute to effective conservation planning and sustainable management of protected landscapes.
