Course Introduction

Poverty remains one of the most persistent development challenges globally, requiring precise identification, measurement, and targeting of affected populations. Traditional statistical methods alone are often insufficient to capture the spatial complexity of poverty distribution.

GIS provides a powerful approach for visualizing, analyzing, and understanding poverty patterns across different geographic scales. It enables policymakers and development practitioners to identify poverty hotspots and prioritize interventions effectively.

This training course introduces participants to the use of GIS and spatial data analysis techniques for mapping poverty, inequality, and socioeconomic deprivation in both urban and rural contexts.

Participants will learn how to integrate demographic, economic, and environmental data into geospatial systems to create meaningful poverty maps that support evidence-based planning and resource allocation.

The course also explores global poverty measurement frameworks, including multidimensional poverty indices, and demonstrates how GIS enhances their spatial interpretation for better decision-making.

By the end of the training, learners will be equipped with practical skills to design and implement GIS-based poverty mapping systems that support targeted development policies and social intervention programs.

Duration

5 days
