Introduction

Effective natural resource management requires timely, accurate, and location-specific data to support sustainable decision-making and environmental stewardship. The GIS for Natural Resource Management Course is designed to equip participants with the technical knowledge and practical skills necessary to apply Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in monitoring, managing, and conserving land, water, forests, wildlife, and other critical resources. By integrating spatial data with ecological and socio-economic variables, GIS enables more informed planning and adaptive management in natural resource contexts.

This course offers a structured learning experience that blends foundational GIS concepts with hands-on applications tailored to natural resource management. Participants will explore how to collect, process, analyze, and visualize spatial data using tools like ArcGIS and QGIS and integrate remotely sensed data for ecosystem and landscape assessments. Topics such as land use/land cover mapping, resource inventory, environmental impact analysis, and conservation planning will be addressed using real-world case studies and datasets.

Through guided exercises and interactive sessions, learners will develop the capacity to perform geospatial analysis for identifying patterns of resource degradation, assessing habitat suitability, evaluating biodiversity threats, and supporting environmental monitoring programs. Emphasis will also be placed on participatory mapping approaches, community engagement, and the role of GIS in policy formulation and resource governance.

By the end of the course, participants will have gained the skills and confidence to use GIS tools effectively in their natural resource management initiatives. Whether working in forestry, water resource management, agriculture, wildlife conservation, or environmental protection, participants will be able to make better spatially-informed decisions that contribute to sustainable development and environmental resilience.

Who Should Attend?

This course is suitable to:

·       Environmental and natural resource managers in government, NGOs, and private sectors

·       Forestry, wildlife, and biodiversity officers involved in resource inventory and habitat monitoring

·       Agricultural extension workers and land use planners engaged in land resource assessment and management

·       Water resource managers and hydrologists responsible for watershed and ecosystem services monitoring

·       Conservationists and ecologists working on sustainable resource use and habitat protection

·       GIS analysts and data specialists supporting environmental monitoring or spatial planning projects

·       Community development officers and policy advisors involved in participatory natural resource governance

Duration

5 days

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, the participant should be able to:

·       Understand the fundamental principles of GIS and spatial data as they apply to natural resource management and environmental planning.

·       Collect, process, and manage geospatial data relevant to land, water, forests, wildlife, and other natural resources using open-source tools like QGIS.

·       Analyze and interpret spatial data to assess resource availability, identify degradation patterns, and support sustainable utilization strategies.

·       Apply remote sensing techniques for land use/land cover mapping, ecosystem health monitoring, and environmental impact analysis.

·       Integrate socio-economic and ecological data into GIS to support multi-criteria decision-making in resource management.

·       Create thematic maps and spatial visualizations that communicate findings effectively to stakeholders, policymakers, and community members.

·       Use GIS tools for conservation planning and habitat suitability analysis, supporting biodiversity protection and ecosystem resilience.

·       Support participatory mapping and community engagement processes in natural resource governance and planning.

·       Understand how to apply GIS in climate-smart and sustainable natural resource management practices and policies.

·       Develop practical action plans for implementing GIS-based natural resource monitoring and management systems in their respective organizations or projects.
