Course Introduction

Natural hazards such as earthquakes, floods, landslides, volcanic eruptions, wildfires, and storms continue to pose significant risks to lives, infrastructure, and ecosystems. GIS provides powerful analytical tools for mapping hazard zones, assessing vulnerability, and supporting disaster risk reduction strategies.

This course introduces participants to the application of GIS in natural hazard assessment and spatial risk analysis. It focuses on integrating geospatial data, remote sensing imagery, and hazard models to improve understanding of hazard dynamics and exposure patterns.

Participants will learn how to collect, process, and analyze spatial datasets related to geological, hydrological, and climatic hazards. The training emphasizes building hazard maps and risk models that support preparedness, mitigation, and response planning.

A key focus is placed on multi-hazard risk assessment, combining different hazard layers to identify high-risk zones and vulnerable populations. Participants will explore how GIS supports early warning systems and disaster resilience planning.

The course also introduces advanced tools such as satellite-based monitoring, AI-driven hazard prediction models, and cloud GIS platforms. These technologies enhance real-time hazard detection and improve disaster management decision-making.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to design GIS-based hazard assessment models, generate risk maps, and support evidence-based disaster risk reduction strategies for governments and organizations.
