Course Introduction

Fragile ecosystems such as wetlands, coral reefs, mountain habitats, and arid landscapes are increasingly under pressure from human activities and climate change. This course introduces participants to the application of GIS in monitoring, managing, and conserving these sensitive environments. It focuses on how geospatial technologies enable continuous tracking of ecological health and support conservation decision-making.

The course explores how GIS integrates satellite imagery, remote sensing data, field observations, and biodiversity datasets to assess ecosystem conditions. Participants will learn how spatial indicators such as vegetation health, habitat fragmentation, and land degradation are used to monitor ecological changes over time and identify areas requiring urgent conservation action.

A strong emphasis is placed on conservation planning and protected area management. Participants will examine how GIS supports the design, zoning, and monitoring of national parks, marine reserves, wildlife corridors, and biodiversity hotspots. These tools help ensure that conservation strategies are based on accurate spatial evidence and ecological priorities.

The program also highlights climate change impacts on fragile ecosystems, including rising temperatures, sea-level rise, droughts, and extreme weather events. Participants will learn how GIS-based climate models help predict ecological risks and support adaptive conservation strategies that enhance ecosystem resilience.

Modern conservation efforts increasingly rely on real-time monitoring systems. This course introduces tools such as drones, satellite-based Earth observation, and mobile GIS applications that allow continuous tracking of ecosystem changes. These technologies improve response times and strengthen environmental protection efforts.

Ultimately, this course equips participants with advanced geospatial skills to monitor and protect fragile ecosystems effectively. By combining conservation science with GIS technology, learners will be able to support sustainable ecosystem management and global biodiversity protection initiatives.
