Course Introduction

Marine ecosystems are vital for global biodiversity, climate regulation, food security, and economic development. Effective management of marine resources requires accurate spatial information and analytical tools that can support sustainable use and conservation. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) provide powerful capabilities for mapping, analyzing, and managing marine environments.

Coastal and marine environments face increasing pressures from overfishing, pollution, habitat degradation, climate change, and unsustainable development. These challenges require integrated spatial approaches to understand ecosystem dynamics and support evidence-based marine planning and policy development.

This course introduces participants to the application of GIS and remote sensing technologies in marine resource management. Learners will explore how spatial data is used to map coral reefs, fisheries, coastal habitats, ocean currents, and marine protected areas for effective decision-making and conservation planning.

Participants will gain practical skills in processing marine spatial datasets, analyzing oceanographic patterns, and developing marine habitat maps. The training emphasizes real-world applications such as fisheries management, coastal zone planning, marine spatial planning (MSP), and environmental impact assessment.

The course also explores emerging technologies such as satellite oceanography, autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), drones, AI-based marine analytics, and cloud GIS platforms. These innovations are transforming how marine environments are monitored and managed in real time.

By the end of the training, participants will be able to independently conduct marine spatial analysis, develop GIS-based marine resource maps, and support sustainable management strategies for coastal and ocean ecosystems.
