Course Introduction

Land degradation is one of the most pressing environmental challenges affecting agricultural productivity, ecosystem stability, and sustainable development worldwide. It involves processes such as soil erosion, deforestation, salinization, and desertification that reduce land quality and productivity over time.

GIS and remote sensing technologies provide powerful tools for monitoring, mapping, and analyzing land degradation processes across different spatial and temporal scales. These technologies enable scientists and planners to detect changes in land conditions with high accuracy and efficiency.

This training course introduces participants to the application of GIS in land degradation assessment, focusing on how spatial data can be used to identify, quantify, and monitor degraded land areas for effective intervention planning.

Participants will learn how to integrate satellite imagery, field data, and environmental indicators into GIS systems to analyze land cover changes, soil conditions, vegetation loss, and other degradation factors.

The course also explores global frameworks such as land degradation neutrality (LDN) and how GIS supports monitoring progress toward restoration and sustainable land management goals.

By the end of the training, learners will be able to design GIS-based land degradation assessment systems that support environmental restoration, policy planning, and sustainable land use management.

Duration
