Introduction
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have become indispensable tools in the modern infrastructure landscape. This course, GIS for Infrastructure Planning, Development, and Maintenance, is designed to equip participants with a comprehensive understanding of how spatial data and geospatial technologies can be harnessed to support the planning, design, development, and long-term management of infrastructure systems. From urban transportation networks to water supply systems and utility grids, GIS provides the spatial intelligence needed to make data-driven decisions in infrastructure development.
The course introduces participants to the core principles and functionalities of GIS, with a particular focus on its application in infrastructure projects. Through practical demonstrations and real-world case studies, learners will explore how GIS supports site selection, spatial analysis, network modeling, environmental impact assessment, and project monitoring. Emphasis will be placed on integrating GIS with other infrastructure planning tools to improve project efficiency, sustainability, and resilience.
Participants will gain hands-on experience with leading GIS software tools, learning how to collect, visualize, analyze, and manage geospatial data relevant to various infrastructure sectors. Topics such as asset mapping, infrastructure condition monitoring, and predictive maintenance using spatial data analytics will also be explored. The course further highlights the role of GIS in supporting smart infrastructure and digital twin technologies, which are revolutionizing how infrastructure is designed and maintained.
By the end of the course, participants will be well-positioned to apply GIS solutions to improve infrastructure planning and operations. The course is suitable for professionals in engineering, urban planning, construction, public works, and asset management who seek to enhance their technical capacity in using GIS for informed decision-making and sustainable infrastructure development.
Duration
10 days
Who should Attend?
This course is ideal for
· Urban and Regional Planners who need to integrate spatial analysis into land use, transportation, and infrastructure development plans.
· Engineers and Infrastructure Developers working on the design, construction, and maintenance of roads, bridges, utilities, and public facilities.
· GIS Specialists and Technicians seeking to enhance their skills in applying GIS tools to infrastructure-focused applications.
· Government Officials and Policy Makers responsible for planning, managing, and regulating infrastructure and public works projects.
· Environmental and Sustainability Experts involved in assessing the environmental impacts of infrastructure and implementing sustainable development strategies.
· Researchers interested in geospatial analysis for infrastructure systems and spatial planning.
· NGOs and Development Partners working on community infrastructure, disaster risk reduction, and urban resilience programs.
Course Objectives
By the end of this course the learners should be able to:
· Understand the fundamentals of GIS, including the principles, components, and capabilities of Geographic Information Systems, with an emphasis on infrastructure-related applications.
· Apply GIS in infrastructure planning and design by using spatial data and GIS tools to support strategic planning, feasibility analysis, and optimal site selection for infrastructure projects.
· Enhance infrastructure development through spatial analysis and modeling to guide design, resource allocation, and impact assessment.
· Utilize GIS for infrastructure monitoring and maintenance by tracking infrastructure assets, monitoring their condition, and supporting preventive and predictive maintenance strategies.
· Integrate GIS with emerging technologies such as GPS, remote sensing, IoT, and BIM to support smart infrastructure and digital twin development.
· Interpret and communicate GIS-based insights through maps, reports, and visualizations that support data-driven decision-making and stakeholder engagement.
