Course Introduction

The global humanitarian landscape is increasingly complex, with migration crises, natural disasters, and conflicts creating urgent needs for evidence-based decision-making. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have become indispensable in managing these challenges.

GIS supports humanitarian relief by mapping vulnerable populations, identifying safe corridors, and analyzing resource distribution. In migration studies, it enables spatial analysis of displacement trends, settlement dynamics, and long-term integration.

This course equips participants with advanced GIS knowledge and tools to respond effectively to humanitarian emergencies and migration-related issues. Learners will explore cutting-edge methods for analyzing spatial patterns, modeling refugee flows, and supporting policy frameworks.

Participants will gain hands-on experience with geospatial datasets from humanitarian organizations, UN agencies, and open-source platforms. Training includes both technical skills and applied case studies to ensure real-world readiness.

Emerging technologies such as remote sensing, drones, and AI-driven analytics will be integrated to showcase their role in crisis monitoring, rapid response, and long-term resilience planning.

By the end of the course, learners will have the expertise to design GIS-based solutions that strengthen humanitarian coordination, support migration studies, and improve global responses to displacement and crisis.

Who Should Attend

  • Humanitarian aid and disaster response professionals
  • Migration and refugee studies researchers
  • Staff from UN agencies, NGOs, and INGOs
  • Government agencies working on disaster risk reduction and migration policy
  • Urban and regional planners addressing displacement challenges
  • Data analysts and GIS professionals in humanitarian fields
  • Academics and graduate students in migration, development, or GIS studies
  • Security and peacebuilding practitioners
  • Climate change and resilience specialists
  • Development program managers and policy advisors

Duration

5 days

Course Objectives

  • Equip participants with GIS skills for mapping humanitarian crises, including population displacement, refugee settlement, and resource allocation.
  • Train learners to analyze migration flows using spatial modeling and predictive techniques to inform evidence-based humanitarian planning.
  • Provide practical knowledge on using GIS for disaster response, logistics, and coordination of emergency relief efforts.
  • Strengthen the ability to integrate remote sensing data with GIS for monitoring conflict zones, droughts, and disaster-affected areas.
  • Develop capacity to use GIS in analyzing socio-economic impacts of displacement and migration at local, national, and global levels.
  • Enhance participants’ ability to create geospatial dashboards and visualization tools for humanitarian decision-making and reporting.
  • Explore the role of GIS in climate-induced migration, resilience building, and long-term adaptation planning.
  • Train participants to assess humanitarian vulnerabilities through spatial risk and hazard mapping.
  • Provide exposure to global case studies on GIS in refugee management, humanitarian supply chains, and migration policy development.
  • Enable participants to design independent GIS projects for humanitarian and migration studies that address real-world needs.
