Course Introduction
Human mobility and migration have become central themes in global development, security, urban planning, and humanitarian response. Population movements driven by economic opportunities, conflicts, climate change, and social dynamics require advanced analytical tools to understand patterns, drivers, and impacts. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) provide powerful capabilities for mapping, analyzing, and modeling migration flows and human mobility trends across local, regional, and global scales.
This course equips participants with advanced geospatial skills to analyze migration patterns, population displacement, urban mobility systems, and cross-border movements. Participants will learn how GIS and spatial analytics can be used to track migration corridors, identify push and pull factors, assess settlement patterns, and support evidence-based policy and planning for migration management and human development.
The training emphasizes practical applications of GIS in migration studies, including displacement mapping, refugee movement tracking, urban mobility analysis, demographic change modeling, and spatial population distribution analysis. Participants will gain hands-on experience working with census data, mobile data sources, satellite imagery, and socioeconomic datasets to better understand human mobility systems.
Special focus is given to emerging technologies transforming migration analytics, including big data analytics, artificial intelligence, mobile phone data tracking, satellite-based population estimation, cloud GIS platforms, and predictive modeling systems. These technologies enable real-time monitoring of population movements and improve decision-making for governments, humanitarian agencies, and urban planners.
The course also explores policy frameworks, migration governance systems, humanitarian response mechanisms, urbanization trends, and global migration agreements. Participants will understand how GIS supports refugee management, disaster-induced displacement response, urban migration planning, and cross-border mobility regulation in complex socio-political environments.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to design GIS-based migration analysis systems, interpret human mobility patterns, support displacement monitoring, and contribute to migration policy development using geospatial intelligence and data-driven insights.
