Course Introduction

Housing and settlement planning is a critical component of sustainable urban and regional development, influencing how communities grow, access services, and maintain quality of life. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) provide powerful tools for analyzing settlement patterns, housing demand, land availability, and infrastructure distribution. This course equips participants with practical skills to apply GIS in housing and settlement planning for more informed and sustainable development decisions.

Rapid urbanization, population growth, informal settlement expansion, and increasing pressure on land resources have created complex housing challenges in both developing and developed regions. Governments and planners require accurate spatial data to understand housing deficits, slum growth, infrastructure gaps, and settlement expansion trends. GIS enables visualization and analysis of these dynamics, supporting evidence-based housing policy and planning interventions.

This training introduces participants to spatial data collection, management, and analysis techniques used in housing and settlement studies. Participants will learn how to integrate demographic, land use, environmental, and infrastructure datasets into GIS platforms to evaluate settlement suitability, housing distribution, and urban growth patterns. Practical exercises will focus on real-world housing planning scenarios and spatial decision-making.

Housing development is closely linked with transportation systems, public services, environmental sustainability, and economic opportunities. GIS helps planners identify optimal locations for housing developments by analyzing accessibility to schools, healthcare, employment centers, and infrastructure networks. This course demonstrates how spatial analysis improves housing equity and supports balanced settlement development.

Emerging technologies such as remote sensing, drones, artificial intelligence, and smart city platforms are transforming housing and settlement planning. These tools allow for real-time monitoring of urban expansion, informal settlement mapping, and infrastructure assessment. Participants will explore how these technologies integrate with GIS to improve housing planning efficiency and accuracy.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to conduct spatial housing analysis, evaluate settlement patterns, support urban planning decisions, and develop GIS-based housing strategies. The training builds strong technical and analytical skills essential for modern housing development and sustainable settlement planning.
