Course Introduction

Health facility mapping has become a critical component of modern healthcare planning, service delivery optimization, disease surveillance, and public health decision-making. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) provide powerful tools for visualizing, analyzing, and managing spatial information related to hospitals, clinics, laboratories, pharmacies, and other healthcare facilities. This course equips participants with practical skills to develop accurate health facility maps that support resource allocation, healthcare accessibility assessments, emergency preparedness, and evidence-based planning initiatives across healthcare systems.

As healthcare systems continue to expand and populations become increasingly mobile, understanding the geographic distribution of health services is essential for ensuring equitable access to care. GIS enables health professionals to identify underserved populations, analyze service coverage gaps, and optimize healthcare infrastructure investments. Through this course, participants will learn how to integrate spatial data, demographic information, and health indicators to create comprehensive mapping solutions that improve health outcomes and strengthen healthcare delivery systems.

The training introduces participants to key concepts of health geography, healthcare accessibility analysis, facility location planning, and spatial epidemiology. Participants will explore how GIS technologies support healthcare planning by providing visual and analytical tools for understanding population health needs, healthcare utilization patterns, and service delivery challenges. Real-world case studies will demonstrate the role of GIS in supporting national health strategies and public health interventions.

Participants will gain hands-on experience in collecting, managing, validating, and analyzing health facility datasets using industry-standard GIS platforms. The course covers health facility geocoding, spatial database management, network analysis, catchment area delineation, and service accessibility modeling. These skills enable organizations to develop reliable healthcare information systems that support operational efficiency and strategic planning objectives.

Emerging technologies including mobile data collection applications, cloud-based GIS platforms, satellite imagery, artificial intelligence, and real-time health information systems are transforming health facility mapping practices. This course examines these innovations and demonstrates how modern geospatial technologies can improve data accuracy, monitoring capabilities, and healthcare planning effectiveness. Participants will explore current trends and future opportunities in digital health mapping and spatial health analytics.

By the end of the training, participants will possess the knowledge and technical expertise required to design, implement, maintain, and utilize GIS-based health facility mapping systems. They will be able to support healthcare planning, resource optimization, service coverage analysis, emergency response coordination, and health sector monitoring efforts through effective use of geospatial technologies and analytical methods.
