Course Introduction

Green infrastructure is increasingly recognized as a sustainable approach to urban and regional development, integrating natural systems into planning to enhance ecosystem services, climate resilience, and environmental quality. GIS plays a central role in identifying, designing, and managing green infrastructure networks.

This course introduces participants to GIS applications in green infrastructure planning, focusing on how spatial data supports the design of parks, urban forests, wetlands, green corridors, and sustainable drainage systems. It emphasizes data-driven environmental planning approaches.

Participants will learn how to analyze land suitability, map ecological networks, and identify priority areas for green infrastructure development. The training demonstrates how GIS integrates environmental, hydrological, and socio-economic data for sustainable planning.

The course also explores how green infrastructure contributes to climate adaptation, flood mitigation, biodiversity conservation, and urban cooling. Participants will gain skills in assessing ecosystem services and integrating them into spatial planning frameworks.

Advanced modules introduce remote sensing, spatial modeling, landscape ecology tools, and AI-driven environmental analysis. These technologies support large-scale green infrastructure planning and help optimize ecological connectivity and land use decisions.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to design GIS-based green infrastructure systems, evaluate environmental benefits, and support sustainable urban and regional planning strategies.
