Course Introduction

The integration of Gender, Equity, and Social Inclusion (GESI) principles into research, planning, and policy has become essential in achieving inclusive development outcomes. Socio-spatial inequalities persist across sectors, often exacerbated by limited access to resources, services, and opportunities for marginalized groups. Addressing these disparities requires advanced tools to analyze and visualize spatial data in ways that highlight patterns of inequality and inform inclusive interventions.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) offer powerful capabilities to map and analyze socio-spatial dynamics, uncover hidden inequities, and integrate gender-disaggregated data into planning and decision-making processes. By applying GIS in GESI-focused studies, policymakers, researchers, and practitioners can strengthen strategies for equitable resource allocation, community development, and social justice.

This course, GIS for Gender, Equity, and Social Inclusion Studies, provides participants with both theoretical foundations and practical skills in applying GIS to capture, analyze, and interpret gender and social inclusion dimensions in different contexts. It bridges the gap between geospatial technologies and inclusive development practices.

Participants will learn to process and analyze spatial data on gendered access to services, employment, health, education, and land rights. Emphasis will be placed on mapping vulnerable populations, visualizing inequalities, and applying GIS to monitor progress on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those linked to gender equality and reduced inequalities.

In addition, the course explores emerging applications of GIS in intersectional analysis, participatory mapping with marginalized communities, and integration of geospatial tools with qualitative and survey data. Special attention will be given to ethical data practices and culturally sensitive approaches to handling social inclusion data.

By the end of this course, participants will have the capacity to design and implement GIS projects that address gender and social inclusion issues, generate evidence-based insights, and support more equitable development policies and programs globally.
