Course Introduction

Food systems play a central role in ensuring food security, nutrition, and livelihoods, yet they face growing challenges from climate change, population growth, and evolving market dynamics. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are increasingly vital in analyzing, visualizing, and optimizing food system processes.

This course equips participants with knowledge and skills to apply GIS in mapping agricultural production, food value chains, and market accessibility. By integrating geospatial data with socio-economic indicators, learners will explore strategies to strengthen resilience and inclusivity in food systems.

Participants will learn how GIS can be used to assess accessibility to markets, identify infrastructure gaps, and optimize food distribution networks. Case studies from diverse contexts will demonstrate how spatial tools can support improved planning, investment, and policy interventions.

Special attention will be given to the role of GIS in advancing sustainable food systems, including monitoring supply chain efficiency, reducing post-harvest losses, and promoting equitable market opportunities for smallholder farmers.

Emerging applications such as mobile GIS, drone technology, and artificial intelligence for food system analytics will be discussed, preparing participants to address contemporary challenges in agricultural and food sector planning.

By the end of the course, learners will be equipped with both technical skills and analytical insights to use GIS in designing inclusive, efficient, and sustainable food systems, enhancing food security and market access for vulnerable populations.

Who Should Attend

  • Agricultural planners and food security officers
  • GIS and remote sensing specialists in agriculture
  • Value chain and supply chain professionals
  • Food systems and nutrition program managers
  • Government agencies in agriculture and trade
  • NGOs and development organizations in food security
  • Policy makers and donors supporting rural development
  • Researchers in agricultural economics and geospatial studies
  • Private sector actors in agri-business and logistics

Duration

5 days

Course Objectives

  • Build participants’ capacity to apply GIS tools for analyzing and mapping agricultural production, value chains, and food systems at multiple scales.
  • Enable learners to assess physical and economic access to markets using spatial accessibility models and infrastructure mapping techniques.
  • Develop skills to integrate socio-economic and environmental indicators with geospatial data to inform food security and resilience strategies.
  • Strengthen capacity to evaluate food distribution networks, supply chains, and post-harvest systems through GIS-based analysis.
  • Train participants in identifying infrastructure gaps and bottlenecks affecting farmers’ and traders’ access to markets using geospatial data.
  • Enhance participants’ understanding of how GIS supports inclusive market development and equitable opportunities for smallholder farmers.
  • Provide practical experience in using GIS and mobile applications for field-level data collection and food system mapping.
  • Introduce learners to emerging technologies such as drones, big data, and AI in enhancing food system efficiency and sustainability.
  • Expose participants to global case studies and best practices of GIS applications in food security and market planning interventions.
  • Equip learners to design, implement, and present GIS-based food system and market access projects as part of independent capstone projects.
