Course Introduction

Flooding remains one of the most frequent and devastating natural hazards worldwide, causing significant loss of life, infrastructure damage, and economic disruption. Effective flood risk assessment is essential for preparedness, mitigation, and resilience building. This course introduces participants to the use of GIS technologies for analyzing flood hazards, exposure, vulnerability, and risk in both urban and rural environments.

As climate change intensifies extreme weather events, flood frequency and severity are increasing across many regions. Unplanned urbanization, poor drainage systems, and environmental degradation further exacerbate flood impacts. GIS provides powerful tools to integrate hydrological, topographical, and land use data to understand flood dynamics and support evidence-based planning and disaster management.

Participants will gain hands-on skills in spatial data collection, hydrological modeling, floodplain mapping, and risk zonation using GIS platforms. The training focuses on combining satellite imagery, digital elevation models, rainfall data, and historical flood records to develop comprehensive flood risk assessments and predictive models.

The course also emphasizes the importance of vulnerability and exposure analysis in identifying communities and infrastructure at highest risk. Through spatial analysis, participants will learn how to prioritize intervention areas, design mitigation strategies, and support emergency response planning for flood-prone regions.

Emerging technologies such as high-resolution satellite imagery, LiDAR-derived elevation models, real-time hydrological sensors, and AI-based flood prediction systems are transforming flood risk management. Participants will explore how these innovations enhance accuracy and speed in flood mapping and early warning systems.

By the end of the training, participants will be able to independently conduct flood hazard mapping, perform risk assessments, and produce GIS-based flood risk models to support disaster preparedness, climate adaptation, and sustainable land use planning.
