Course Introduction

Fisheries resources play a vital role in food security, livelihoods, and economic development across coastal and inland communities. Effective fisheries management requires accurate spatial data to monitor fish stocks, habitats, and fishing activities. GIS provides powerful tools to support sustainable fisheries planning.

Traditional fisheries management approaches often rely on limited sampling and non-spatial datasets, making it difficult to understand fish distribution patterns and ecosystem dynamics. GIS enables integration of spatial, environmental, and ecological data for informed decision-making.

This course introduces participants to the application of GIS in fisheries management, focusing on mapping aquatic ecosystems, monitoring fishing activities, and analyzing marine and freshwater resource distribution using spatial technologies.

Participants will learn how to integrate remote sensing data, field surveys, and fisheries statistics into GIS platforms to support stock assessment, habitat protection, and sustainable resource utilization.

The course also explores emerging technologies such as satellite-based ocean monitoring, vessel tracking systems, AI-driven fish stock prediction, and digital fisheries monitoring platforms that enhance modern fisheries governance.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to apply GIS tools for fisheries planning, resource assessment, monitoring fishing pressure, and supporting evidence-based fisheries management policies.

Duration
