Course Introduction

Fisheries and marine ecosystems are increasingly facing pressures from overexploitation, climate change, habitat degradation, marine pollution, coastal development, and competing ocean uses. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have become essential tools for supporting sustainable fisheries management and marine spatial planning by enabling stakeholders to visualize, analyze, and manage complex marine environments. This course provides participants with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills in applying GIS technologies to fisheries assessment, marine resource management, ecosystem conservation, and spatial planning initiatives that promote sustainable ocean governance and blue economy development.

Marine spatial planning requires the integration of environmental, ecological, social, and economic information to support balanced decision-making across diverse marine sectors. GIS facilitates the collection, management, analysis, and visualization of marine datasets, enabling planners and resource managers to identify conflicts, assess opportunities, and allocate marine resources efficiently. Participants will gain an in-depth understanding of how geospatial technologies support evidence-based marine management, fisheries sustainability, biodiversity conservation, and integrated coastal zone management programs.

The course emphasizes practical applications of GIS in fisheries monitoring, fishing effort analysis, habitat mapping, stock assessment support, marine protected area planning, marine resource inventory development, and ecosystem-based management approaches. Participants will learn how to integrate satellite imagery, oceanographic datasets, vessel tracking information, biological surveys, and socioeconomic indicators into comprehensive spatial analysis frameworks that support sustainable marine resource utilization and conservation objectives.

Special attention is given to emerging technologies transforming marine resource management, including Earth observation systems, artificial intelligence, machine learning, autonomous marine monitoring platforms, cloud GIS, digital ocean initiatives, real-time vessel monitoring systems, and marine digital twins. Participants will explore how these innovations improve marine data collection, monitoring efficiency, predictive modeling capabilities, and strategic planning for fisheries and marine ecosystem management.

The training also examines legal, policy, governance, and institutional frameworks that influence marine spatial planning and fisheries management. Participants will explore international marine governance principles, marine protected area regulations, blue economy strategies, stakeholder engagement mechanisms, and climate adaptation approaches. They will learn how GIS supports regulatory compliance, resource allocation, conflict resolution, and sustainable marine development through robust geospatial decision-support systems.

By the end of the course, participants will possess the technical expertise and strategic understanding necessary to apply GIS in fisheries management and marine spatial planning contexts. They will be equipped to support sustainable marine resource governance, improve fisheries management outcomes, enhance ecosystem resilience, and contribute to informed decision-making processes that balance environmental protection, economic development, and social well-being.
