Course Introduction

Urban areas worldwide are experiencing rapid population growth, which puts immense pressure on natural systems and built infrastructure. As cities expand, there is a growing need to incorporate green infrastructure solutions that support sustainable urban development, enhance resilience, and deliver vital ecosystem services.

Green infrastructure such as parks, wetlands, green roofs, and urban forests plays a critical role in improving air quality, reducing heat islands, managing stormwater, and providing recreational opportunities. Effective evaluation of these assets requires robust spatial analysis and data-driven planning approaches.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have emerged as indispensable tools for analyzing, monitoring, and mapping green infrastructure. Through spatial modeling and visualization, planners and decision-makers can assess the value of ecosystem services, prioritize investments, and integrate nature-based solutions into urban development.

This course equips participants with practical skills to apply GIS in evaluating green infrastructure and urban ecosystem services. Learners will explore analytical techniques for quantifying benefits, such as carbon sequestration, flood mitigation, biodiversity support, and cultural services.

Practical exercises will introduce participants to GIS software, remote sensing data, and innovative tools like AI and cloud-based platforms. Real-world case studies from global cities will demonstrate how geospatial intelligence informs policies and strategies for sustainable urban design.

By the end of this training, participants will be able to use GIS not only to measure and map ecosystem services but also to design urban environments that balance human well-being with ecological health.
