Course Introduction

Disease surveillance is a critical public health function that involves continuous monitoring, data collection, analysis, and interpretation of health-related events. GIS enhances surveillance systems by adding spatial intelligence to detect, track, and predict disease patterns effectively.

Traditional disease monitoring systems often rely on tabular and non-spatial data, which limits the ability to identify geographic hotspots and transmission pathways. GIS enables health professionals to visualize disease distribution and uncover spatial relationships.

This course introduces participants to the application of GIS in disease surveillance systems. It focuses on how spatial data can be used to track outbreaks, monitor health trends, and support timely public health interventions.

Participants will learn how to integrate epidemiological data with geographic information systems to map disease spread, identify high-risk areas, and support evidence-based decision-making in health planning and response.

The course also explores real-time surveillance systems, mobile data collection tools, and integration of GIS with laboratory and hospital reporting systems. These innovations significantly improve early warning and response capabilities.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to design GIS-based disease surveillance systems, analyze spatial epidemiological data, and support public health interventions through geospatial intelligence.
