Course Introduction

Cultural heritage mapping plays a vital role in preserving historical sites, archaeological resources, and intangible cultural assets. It enables societies to document, protect, and manage cultural resources that define identity, history, and collective memory.

GIS technology provides powerful tools for capturing, analyzing, and visualizing cultural heritage sites in spatial context. It allows heritage professionals to map monuments, archaeological sites, museums, and cultural landscapes with precision and accuracy.

This course introduces participants to the application of GIS in cultural heritage mapping, focusing on site documentation, spatial analysis, preservation planning, and heritage resource management using modern geospatial technologies.

Participants will learn how to integrate historical records, field survey data, remote sensing imagery, and archival information into GIS platforms to build comprehensive cultural heritage databases.

The training also explores emerging technologies such as 3D heritage modeling, drone-based archaeological surveys, virtual reality mapping, and digital preservation systems that support cultural conservation efforts.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to develop, manage, and analyze cultural heritage datasets using GIS tools to support conservation planning, research, and heritage tourism development.
