Course Introduction
Cultural heritage institutions increasingly rely on geospatial technologies to safeguard, document, and manage vulnerable sites, artifacts, and intangible traditions. This course provides a comprehensive grounding in GIS-driven digitization workflows that enhance accuracy, accessibility, and long-term preservation. It emphasizes how spatial analysis can transform heritage management processes through evidence-based insights.
As climate change, rapid urbanization, armed conflict, and environmental degradation continue to threaten cultural resources, professionals need advanced geospatial tools to respond with precision and urgency. This program explores how GIS improves risk assessment, site monitoring, and adaptive conservation planning, enabling practitioners to make proactive, data-supported decisions that protect irreplaceable assets.
The course also delves into the expanding role of digital preservation in global heritage governance, highlighting how geospatial datasets strengthen collaboration between governments, researchers, local communities, and international agencies. Participants gain practical competencies for building interoperable digital archives and integrating heritage data with broader planning systems.
A key focus is the integration of emerging technologies—such as 3D mapping, UAV photogrammetry, spatial databases, and remote sensing—to create enriched digital representations of heritage sites. Through hands-on exposure, learners develop the technical confidence required to use GIS as a powerful tool for documentation, visualization, and predictive modeling.
The program further addresses cultural sensitivity, ethical data management, and the importance of community participation in heritage digitization projects. By understanding the socio-cultural dynamics of heritage landscapes, participants will apply GIS in ways that respect identity, memory, ownership, and intangible heritage values.
Ultimately, this course equips practitioners, policymakers, and researchers with the capacity to apply GIS for strategic preservation, disaster preparedness, and long-term sustainability. By the end, participants will be able to design and implement high-quality, inclusive, and future-proof digitization initiatives that significantly strengthen heritage protection.
