Course Introduction

Climate change is increasingly reshaping ecosystems, economies, and human settlements, creating urgent demand for adaptive planning strategies. GIS provides a powerful framework for analyzing climate risks, vulnerabilities, and spatial impacts to support informed adaptation decision-making across sectors.

This course introduces participants to the application of Geographic Information Systems in climate adaptation planning. It focuses on integrating climate data, socio-economic indicators, and environmental variables to support resilience-building strategies at local, regional, and national levels.

Participants will learn how to map climate hazards such as floods, droughts, sea level rise, and heatwaves, and assess their spatial impacts on communities and infrastructure. GIS enables the visualization of risk exposure and supports targeted adaptation interventions.

The training emphasizes the use of spatial modeling techniques to evaluate vulnerability and adaptive capacity. Participants will explore how to combine climate projections with geospatial datasets to anticipate future risks and guide long-term planning.

Emerging technologies such as remote sensing, machine learning, and climate informatics are also integrated into the course. These tools enhance predictive capabilities and improve the accuracy of climate adaptation planning models.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to design GIS-based climate adaptation frameworks, develop risk maps, and support evidence-based resilience planning for climate-sensitive sectors.
