Course Introduction

Air quality monitoring is a critical component of environmental management and public health protection, especially in rapidly urbanizing and industrializing regions. GIS provides powerful tools to spatially analyze air pollution patterns, identify emission sources, and support evidence-based environmental decision-making.

Traditional air quality monitoring systems often rely on limited ground-based stations, which may not fully capture spatial variability in pollution levels. GIS combined with remote sensing helps bridge this gap by integrating satellite data, sensor networks, and spatial modeling techniques.

This course introduces participants to the application of GIS in air quality monitoring and management. It focuses on how spatial data can be used to map pollutants such as PM2.5, PM10, NO2, SO2, and CO across urban and regional landscapes.

Participants will learn how to integrate air quality datasets from monitoring stations, satellite observations, and meteorological sources. The training emphasizes spatial analysis techniques for identifying pollution hotspots and assessing exposure risks.

The course also explores advanced modeling approaches such as dispersion modeling, predictive air quality forecasting, and real-time monitoring systems using GIS dashboards. These tools support environmental regulation, urban planning, and climate change mitigation.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to develop GIS-based air quality monitoring systems, analyze pollution trends spatially, and support policy interventions aimed at improving environmental and public health outcomes.
