Course Introduction

The mining sector is a cornerstone of economic development but also one of the most environmentally intensive industries. With rising global demand for minerals, there is an urgent need to adopt sustainable practices that minimize ecological impacts while ensuring resource efficiency.

Geospatial technologies such as GIS and remote sensing provide powerful tools to support sustainable mining operations. They enable mapping of mineral resources, monitoring of environmental impacts, and designing of rehabilitation strategies, all while aligning with principles of the circular economy.

This course equips participants with advanced skills in applying GIS and remote sensing for resource management, environmental compliance, and transition strategies toward circular and low-carbon mining economies. It bridges technical geospatial expertise with sustainability frameworks.

Participants will explore applications such as mine site planning, monitoring of tailings dams, biodiversity impact assessment, and tracking of land-use change. They will also learn how geospatial data supports responsible supply chains and aligns with international sustainability standards.

Emphasis will be placed on case studies, hands-on exercises, and applied tools that allow participants to analyze real datasets. By working on practical mining and post-mining rehabilitation challenges, learners will gain the expertise needed to support industry transformation.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to design geospatial solutions that improve mining sustainability, support compliance with global frameworks, and advance transitions to circular economy models in mineral resource management.
