Course Introduction

Geotechnical site investigation and soil sampling are fundamental processes that provide the critical information required for the safe, economical, and sustainable design of civil engineering and infrastructure projects. Accurate site investigations enable engineers to understand subsurface conditions, identify geotechnical risks, evaluate soil and rock properties, determine groundwater conditions, and develop appropriate foundation and earthworks solutions. Proper soil sampling and testing form the basis for reliable geotechnical analysis, helping to minimize construction uncertainties, prevent structural failures, reduce project costs, and ensure compliance with engineering standards. This comprehensive training course equips participants with the practical knowledge and technical skills required to plan, conduct, supervise, and evaluate geotechnical site investigations and soil sampling activities.

The course provides participants with a comprehensive understanding of geotechnical investigation planning, geological assessments, drilling methods, trial pits, borehole logging, soil and rock sampling techniques, in-situ testing, groundwater investigations, laboratory testing requirements, and geotechnical reporting. Participants will learn how to select appropriate investigation methods, obtain representative soil samples, preserve sample quality, conduct field observations, interpret subsurface data, and prepare reliable geotechnical reports that support engineering design and construction decisions. Practical field demonstrations, laboratory exercises, and real-world case studies reinforce theoretical knowledge while strengthening participants' field investigation competencies.

As geotechnical engineering embraces digital transformation, site investigations increasingly incorporate Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Building Information Modeling (BIM), drones, remote sensing, Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), digital borehole logging systems, Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, cloud-based geotechnical data platforms, artificial intelligence, and machine learning technologies. This course explores these emerging technologies and demonstrates how digital tools improve field data collection, spatial analysis, investigation accuracy, real-time monitoring, reporting efficiency, and project decision-making while supporting modern geotechnical engineering practices.

Participants will also develop practical competencies in investigation planning, drilling supervision, soil classification, sample preservation, field testing, Standard Penetration Tests (SPT), Cone Penetration Tests (CPT), groundwater monitoring, quality assurance, risk assessment, documentation, laboratory coordination, and engineering interpretation. The course emphasizes internationally recognized geotechnical investigation standards, laboratory quality management principles, sustainability practices, occupational health and safety requirements, and engineering ethics that support reliable geotechnical data collection and effective infrastructure development.

The training further examines legal, contractual, environmental, sustainability, and occupational health and safety considerations associated with geotechnical investigations and soil sampling activities. Participants will understand regulatory compliance requirements, environmental protection measures, land access considerations, waste management practices, hazardous ground conditions, drilling safety, documentation standards, and project risk management while learning practical approaches to improving investigation quality, reducing geotechnical uncertainties, and ensuring successful project delivery.

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will possess the expertise to effectively plan and supervise geotechnical site investigations, collect representative soil samples, interpret field and laboratory data, prepare professional investigation reports, and support sound engineering decision-making. These competencies enable organizations to improve foundation design, strengthen construction quality, reduce geotechnical risks, enhance regulatory compliance, optimize project planning, and successfully deliver safe, resilient, and cost-effective civil engineering and infrastructure projects.
