Course Introduction

Geotechnical investigation is a fundamental component of successful infrastructure, construction, mining, transportation, and civil engineering projects because it provides essential information about subsurface conditions, soil properties, groundwater behavior, rock formations, and potential geological hazards. Effective planning of geotechnical investigations enables project teams to understand site constraints before design and construction activities begin, reducing uncertainty and supporting informed engineering decisions. The Geotechnical Investigation Project Planning Course equips participants with the knowledge and practical skills required to plan, coordinate, resource, and manage geotechnical investigations in accordance with project objectives, technical requirements, applicable standards, and site-specific conditions.

Planning a geotechnical investigation requires a systematic understanding of project scope, geological setting, anticipated ground conditions, proposed structures, investigation objectives, and the consequences of uncertainty. Poorly planned investigations may result in insufficient sampling, inappropriate testing methods, inadequate borehole coverage, unexpected ground conditions, construction delays, and costly redesign. This course explores how to establish investigation requirements by reviewing existing geological information, conducting preliminary site assessments, identifying knowledge gaps, and developing investigation strategies proportionate to project complexity and risk. Participants learn to translate engineering design requirements into clearly defined investigation objectives, ensuring that fieldwork and laboratory testing produce reliable information that supports foundation design, earthworks, slope stability assessment, excavation planning, and other geotechnical engineering activities.

A major component of geotechnical investigation planning involves selecting appropriate field investigation methods, sampling techniques, in situ tests, laboratory tests, and subsurface exploration locations. These decisions must account for soil and rock characteristics, groundwater conditions, site accessibility, environmental constraints, investigation depth, project budget, and the required level of confidence in the results. The course examines the application and limitations of methods such as borehole drilling, trial pits, cone penetration testing, standard penetration testing, geophysical surveys, groundwater monitoring, and laboratory soil characterization. Participants develop an understanding of how to integrate these methods into a coherent investigation programme, determine suitable exploration coverage, establish sampling and testing requirements, and coordinate technical activities to maximize the value of the information obtained.

Successful investigation planning also depends on effective project management, including scheduling, budgeting, procurement, resource allocation, contractor coordination, health and safety management, and quality assurance. Geotechnical fieldwork frequently takes place under challenging conditions involving restricted access, variable weather, underground utilities, difficult terrain, groundwater inflows, environmental sensitivities, and uncertainty about subsurface conditions. This course addresses the preparation of investigation work plans, resource estimates, fieldwork schedules, technical specifications, risk registers, and contingency arrangements. Participants learn how to coordinate drilling teams, engineering geologists, laboratory personnel, surveyors, environmental specialists, and project stakeholders while maintaining clear communication, documenting field activities, monitoring progress, and controlling changes that may arise as new ground information becomes available.

Emerging technologies and evolving professional requirements are changing how geotechnical investigations are planned, executed, interpreted, and documented. Digital borehole logging, geographic information systems, three-dimensional geological modelling, remote sensing, geophysical techniques, cloud-based field data collection, and artificial intelligence-assisted data processing can improve information management and support more efficient investigation programmes. At the same time, these technologies introduce considerations relating to data quality, interoperability, model uncertainty, cybersecurity, and the need for professional verification. The course also addresses environmental sustainability, groundwater protection, contaminated land, climate-related geohazards, responsible management of drilling waste, and the integration of geotechnical risk assessment into resilient infrastructure planning. Participants examine how modern tools can complement established investigation practices without replacing engineering judgment or the need for representative, reliable field evidence.

By the end of the programme, participants will be able to develop structured geotechnical investigation plans that connect project requirements with appropriate exploration methods, testing programmes, schedules, budgets, quality controls, and risk mitigation measures. They will understand how to evaluate site information, identify critical uncertainties, coordinate multidisciplinary teams, manage contractors, and communicate investigation findings to designers, construction managers, clients, and other stakeholders. Through practical exercises, case studies, and planning scenarios, participants will develop the ability to anticipate fieldwork challenges, respond to changing subsurface conditions, and improve the reliability and efficiency of investigation activities. The course supports better engineering decisions, reduced ground-related uncertainty, improved construction readiness, and more effective delivery of geotechnical and infrastructure projects.
