Course Introduction

Geospatial data has become an increasingly important resource for understanding development challenges, identifying spatial inequalities, allocating resources, and designing interventions that respond to the specific characteristics of places and populations. The Geospatial Data Analytics for Development Planning Training Course provides participants with practical knowledge and analytical skills for using geographic information to support evidence-based development planning and decision-making.

Development challenges rarely occur uniformly across geographic areas. Poverty, access to health and education services, infrastructure deficits, environmental risks, population growth, climate vulnerability, and economic opportunities can vary considerably between communities and locations. This course demonstrates how geospatial data can reveal these differences, identify spatial patterns, and provide planners with evidence that can improve targeting, prioritization, programme design, and resource allocation.

The training introduces participants to the foundations of geospatial data management and analysis, including spatial datasets, coordinate systems, geographic information systems, remote sensing, satellite imagery, spatial databases, and location-based indicators. Participants will learn how different forms of geographic information can be combined with demographic, socioeconomic, environmental, administrative, and development datasets to produce more comprehensive analyses.

A major focus of the course is the practical application of spatial analytics to development planning. Participants will explore techniques for mapping population distributions, assessing accessibility to essential services, identifying underserved communities, analyzing infrastructure coverage, evaluating environmental risks, examining land-use patterns, and understanding geographic inequalities. The course emphasizes translating technical analysis into evidence that can be used by planners, policymakers, programme managers, researchers, and development practitioners.

The course also examines emerging geospatial technologies and analytical approaches, including cloud-based geospatial platforms, artificial intelligence, machine learning, high-resolution satellite imagery, unmanned aerial systems, spatial big data, real-time geospatial monitoring, and location-based analytics. Participants will consider the opportunities and limitations of these technologies, including data availability, technical capacity, privacy, bias, cost, interoperability, digital inequality, and responsible use of location information.

Through practical exercises, case studies, spatial analysis scenarios, visualization activities, and development planning applications, participants will strengthen their ability to turn geographic information into actionable evidence. By the end of the Geospatial Data Analytics for Development Planning Training Course, participants will be better prepared to integrate geospatial evidence into needs assessments, strategic planning, investment decisions, infrastructure development, service delivery, environmental management, monitoring, and evaluation.
