Course Introduction

Secure land tenure and transparent property registries are critical foundations for economic development, social stability, and sustainable urban growth. However, many countries still face challenges of fraud, overlapping claims, and inefficiencies in land administration systems.

Blockchain technology, when combined with geospatial data, offers transformative potential for property rights management. It provides immutable records, enhances trust among stakeholders, and ensures transparency in land governance processes.

This course introduces participants to the intersection of blockchain and geospatial technologies, focusing on practical applications for land tenure, cadastral mapping, and property registries. It emphasizes both technical concepts and institutional frameworks for adoption.

Through hands-on sessions, participants will learn how blockchain can be used to secure cadastral data, record transactions, and integrate spatial layers into decentralized property registries. Use cases from Africa, Asia, and Latin America will be highlighted.

Emerging innovations such as smart contracts, tokenized land assets, and interoperability with national spatial data infrastructures will also be explored. These tools can modernize land governance and foster trust between governments, communities, and investors.

By the end of the course, participants will have the capacity to design, evaluate, and advocate for blockchain-enabled geospatial systems that improve land tenure security, reduce disputes, and promote inclusive economic development.
