Course Introduction

GeoAI and Machine Learning for Spatial Data Training Course provides a comprehensive framework for applying artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning, and spatial analytics to geographic and location-based datasets. The course examines how computational intelligence can be combined with geographic information to identify spatial patterns, classify geographic features, predict spatial phenomena, automate geospatial workflows, and generate insights for complex location-based decisions.

The training covers the complete GeoAI workflow, beginning with spatial problem definition and data acquisition and progressing through geospatial data preparation, feature engineering, model development, training, validation, interpretation, deployment, and monitoring. Participants will work with vector and raster datasets, satellite imagery, remote-sensing products, GPS information, spatial databases, environmental data, demographic information, sensor data, and other geographically referenced sources.

Particular emphasis is placed on machine-learning techniques for spatial data, including supervised learning, unsupervised learning, ensemble methods, clustering, classification, regression, dimensionality reduction, and spatial prediction. Participants will examine how conventional machine-learning methods can be adapted to account for spatial dependence, geographic heterogeneity, spatial scale, temporal variation, and the unique characteristics of location-based observations.

The course also explores deep learning and computer-vision approaches for geospatial applications, including image classification, object detection, semantic segmentation, change detection, feature extraction, and analysis of high-resolution satellite and aerial imagery. Participants will learn how to evaluate models using appropriate spatial validation strategies while recognising challenges such as spatial leakage, biased training samples, class imbalance, limited ground truth, and geographic transferability.

Emerging GeoAI technologies are rapidly expanding through foundation models, large-scale geospatial datasets, cloud computing, multimodal AI, digital twins, real-time sensor networks, and automated spatial intelligence. The course examines these developments alongside responsible-use considerations, including location privacy, algorithmic bias, explainability, model uncertainty, cybersecurity, environmental impacts of computation, and the potential consequences of deploying automated models in high-stakes geographic applications.

By the end of the training, participants will be able to formulate GeoAI problems, prepare spatial datasets for machine learning, engineer geographic features, build and evaluate spatial models, apply deep learning to geospatial imagery, and develop practical GeoAI workflows. Participants will also gain an understanding of how to communicate model outputs, assess uncertainty, and integrate AI-generated spatial intelligence into responsible decision-support systems.
