Course Introduction

Gender plays a central role in shaping how conflict emerges, escalates, and is resolved across societies. Inequalities, exclusion, and unequal power relations often contribute to tensions that fuel instability, while also determining how different groups experience violence and peacebuilding processes. This course provides a comprehensive understanding of the intersection between gender, peacebuilding, and conflict resolution, equipping participants with the analytical and practical skills needed to design inclusive and sustainable peace interventions.

In many conflict-affected contexts, women, men, girls, and boys experience violence and displacement in different ways, yet peace processes have historically excluded women and marginalized groups from meaningful participation. This exclusion limits the effectiveness and sustainability of peace agreements. The course explores how gender-responsive peacebuilding ensures broader participation, enhances legitimacy, and strengthens long-term stability by addressing root causes of conflict and inequality.

Peacebuilding is not only about ending violence but also about transforming relationships, institutions, and structures that perpetuate inequality and conflict. This course examines how gender norms, cultural practices, political systems, and socio-economic disparities influence conflict dynamics. Participants will learn how integrating gender perspectives into conflict analysis leads to more effective prevention strategies and inclusive peacebuilding frameworks.

The course also highlights the role of women as peacebuilders, mediators, negotiators, and community leaders in conflict resolution processes. Despite being disproportionately affected by conflict, women often play critical roles in reconciliation, community rebuilding, and sustaining peace at grassroots levels. Participants will explore strategies for enhancing women's leadership and participation in formal and informal peace processes.

Emerging global challenges such as violent extremism, climate-related conflicts, forced displacement, digital misinformation, and resource-based tensions require adaptive and inclusive peacebuilding strategies. This course introduces innovative approaches to addressing these evolving risks while ensuring that gender considerations remain central to conflict prevention and resolution efforts.

By the end of the course, participants will be equipped to conduct gender-sensitive conflict analysis, design inclusive peacebuilding interventions, facilitate conflict resolution processes, and strengthen community resilience. They will be prepared to contribute effectively to sustainable peace initiatives at local, national, and international levels.
