Introduction

Peace and security challenges today are increasingly complex, shaped by conflict, displacement, violent extremism, climate shocks, and political instability. Gender dynamics profoundly influence how these crises unfold and how communities experience their consequences. This course provides an in-depth exploration of the gendered dimensions of peace and security, equipping participants with the skills and leadership competencies needed to influence policy, strengthen institutions, and support resilient communities.

Participants examine global frameworks including UN Security Council Resolution 1325 and the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) agenda that guide the integration of gender perspectives in peacebuilding, conflict prevention, and security governance. Through case studies from Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and Latin America, learners gain insight into diverse conflict realities and the critical role of women in advancing sustainable peace.

The training goes beyond theory to focus on practical leadership, negotiation, and peacebuilding tools. Participants learn how to design and lead inclusive peace processes, mediate conflicts, and strengthen community security initiatives. The course emphasizes survivor-centered approaches, human rights principles, and ethical leadership, ensuring interventions are guided by dignity, accountability, and protection.

Recognizing the importance of prevention, the course equips participants to analyze conflict drivers, early warning indicators, and risk factors linked to gender inequality, extremist recruitment, and political exclusion. Learners examine how gender-sensitive security strategies can reduce violence, improve community resilience, and promote national stability.

As the global security landscape evolves, the course integrates emerging issues such as climate-driven conflicts, cyber threats, digital activism, economic insecurity, and the evolving role of women in security institutions. It prepares participants to navigate these trends with agility, strategic thinking, and evidence-based decision-making.

By the end of the program, participants walk away with strengthened leadership capacity, a deeper understanding of gender-responsive peace and security approaches, and practical tools to influence institutions, empower communities, and contribute meaningfully to sustainable peacebuilding at local, national, and regional levels.
