Course Introduction
The energy and extractive industries are among the most significant drivers of economic development, industrialization, employment creation, and national revenue generation. However, women and marginalized groups continue to face barriers to participation, leadership, employment, access to resources, decision-making, and equitable benefit sharing within these sectors. Gender-responsive approaches to energy, mining, oil, gas, and other extractive industries are essential for promoting inclusive growth, strengthening governance, improving social outcomes, reducing inequalities, and ensuring that development benefits are shared fairly across all communities. This comprehensive training course equips participants with advanced knowledge and practical skills to integrate gender perspectives into policies, programmes, projects, and operations across the energy and extractive sectors.
Gender mainstreaming in energy and extractive industries extends beyond workforce diversity by addressing equitable access to employment, land rights, clean energy, procurement opportunities, community engagement, occupational safety, leadership representation, environmental sustainability, and social investment. Participants will gain practical competencies in gender analysis, policy development, stakeholder engagement, environmental and social impact assessment, project management, inclusive governance, monitoring and evaluation, and institutional capacity development. The course emphasizes evidence-based strategies that strengthen operational performance while promoting equitable and sustainable sector development.
The programme aligns with internationally recognized frameworks including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) standards, the International Labour Organization (ILO) conventions, the Paris Agreement, and national energy and mining policies. Participants will examine how these frameworks guide gender-responsive governance, responsible resource management, environmental stewardship, community development, and institutional accountability throughout the extractive value chain.
Participants will strengthen their expertise in gender-responsive project planning, environmental and social safeguards, community consultation, inclusive procurement, workforce development, corporate social responsibility, monitoring and evaluation, policy advocacy, and institutional reform. Through practical case studies, simulations, stakeholder engagement exercises, project planning workshops, and collaborative learning sessions, participants will acquire practical tools for designing and managing energy and extractive programmes that enhance inclusion, reduce conflict, strengthen local livelihoods, and improve sustainable development outcomes.
The course also explores emerging issues influencing the sector, including renewable energy transitions, climate-smart mining, critical minerals for clean energy technologies, artificial intelligence in mining operations, digital transformation, local content development, biodiversity conservation, circular economy practices, carbon markets, gender-responsive just transition strategies, responsible supply chains, environmental justice, indigenous community participation, and sustainable finance. Participants will gain practical insights into integrating these innovations into gender-responsive sector planning while promoting resilience, transparency, and inclusive economic development.
By the end of this intensive 10-day programme, participants will possess advanced leadership, technical, and management competencies to develop gender-responsive strategies for the energy and extractive industries, strengthen institutional governance, improve workforce inclusion, promote responsible investment, enhance community participation, manage environmental and social risks, and contribute to equitable, sustainable, and resilient resource development that benefits present and future generations.
