Introduction

Disasters affect men and women differently, with gender dynamics influencing vulnerability, resilience, and access to resources. The Gender and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Training Course equips participants with knowledge and practical tools to integrate gender perspectives into DRR policies, planning, and interventions.

The course examines the social, economic, and cultural factors that shape disaster vulnerability, highlighting how women, children, and marginalized groups often face disproportionate risks. Participants will learn strategies to promote equitable disaster preparedness, response, and recovery.

Participants will gain competencies in risk assessment, planning, community engagement, and gender-sensitive DRR program design. Emphasis is placed on participatory approaches, evidence-based interventions, and inclusive decision-making processes.

Emerging topics such as climate-related disasters, technological tools for risk management, early warning systems, and post-disaster recovery strategies are incorporated. Participants will explore innovative approaches to enhance resilience and empowerment for all community members.

The course also examines international, regional, and national frameworks, including the Sendai Framework, SDGs, and African Union disaster management policies. Participants will learn to align DRR initiatives with global best practices for gender equality and community resilience.

By the end of the program, participants will be able to design, implement, and monitor gender-responsive DRR strategies, advocate for inclusive policies, strengthen institutional capacity, and contribute to sustainable, resilient, and equitable disaster management systems.
