Introduction

Agricultural value chains are evolving as global markets, technological advancements, and climate dynamics reshape how food systems function. Despite women playing a central role in production, processing, and marketing, their participation often remains undervalued and under-supported. This training begins by addressing the persistent gender disparities that limit women’s influence, income, and leadership within value chains. It sets the foundation for transforming agricultural systems into inclusive, resilient, and equitable spaces for all participants.

Effective transformation requires an understanding of the structural, cultural, and economic barriers that shape the experiences of women across diverse agricultural contexts. The course equips participants with the analytical tools needed to identify gendered constraints and opportunities in input supply, production, processing, logistics, distribution, and market access. Through real-world case studies, participants explore how gender bias manifests and which interventions generate meaningful change.

Advancing gender-responsive value chains is not simply a social obligation, it is a strategic economic imperative. Evidence consistently shows that empowering women leads to improved productivity, stronger market linkages, and more competitive agricultural enterprises. This course highlights how integrating gender across policies, production systems, business models, and market structures drives inclusive growth and shared prosperity.

Technology and innovation are transforming agriculture at a rapid pace, opening new doors for women but also introducing new risks of exclusion. Participants examine how digital tools, climate-smart practices, mechanization, and agribusiness innovations can be leveraged to strengthen women’s capabilities and participation. Special focus is placed on ensuring equitable access and addressing digital and financial divides.

As sustainability concerns intensify, gender must be placed at the center of efforts to build resilient agricultural value chains. The course explores climate change, environmental management, food security challenges, and emerging trends that shape global value chains. Participants learn how gender-responsive climate adaptation and sustainable agriculture promote system-wide transformation.

By the end of the program, participants are equipped to design, implement, and advocate for inclusive value chain strategies that elevate women’s roles, expand their economic opportunities, and enhance community well-being. The course blends theory, practice, and hands-on analytical exercises to empower participants to champion gender equality across agricultural systems.
