Introduction

Gender remains a fundamental organizing principle in all societies, shaping the distribution of roles, responsibilities, resources, and power between women, men, girls, and boys. This course explores the ways in which gender dynamics influence individuals' lived experiences, social expectations, and access to opportunities. Participants will engage in critical reflection on how cultural norms, institutional structures, and development processes either reinforce or challenge traditional gender roles. By examining real-life scenarios, policies, and global frameworks, the course provides a solid foundation for understanding the intersection of gender and development.

The training takes a participatory and analytical approach, enabling development professionals to assess gender-based inequalities and identify practical strategies for promoting gender equity. Participants will learn to recognize the structural and systemic barriers that hinder gender equality, including those embedded within families, communities, workplaces, and national institutions. Special emphasis will be placed on understanding how gender intersects with other forms of identity and disadvantage such as age, disability, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status creating layered forms of exclusion.

A core objective of this course is to equip professionals with the tools needed to design, implement, and evaluate gender-responsive programs, policies, and projects. This includes learning how to conduct gender analysis, apply gender mainstreaming principles, and utilize gender-disaggregated data to inform decision-making. Participants will also explore global gender equality frameworks such as CEDAW, the Beijing Platform for Action, and the gender-related commitments within the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), gaining insights into how to align their work with these international mandates.

Ultimately, the Gender Analysis and Development Course seeks to build the capacity of individuals and institutions to promote inclusive, equitable, and transformative development outcomes. By the end of the training, participants will be better equipped to advocate for and lead change within their organizations and communities, fostering environments where both women and men can thrive equally and contribute meaningfully to sustainable development.
