Course Introduction

Gender-Based Violence (GBV) remains one of the most pervasive human rights violations globally, affecting women, girls, men, and boys in both development and humanitarian settings. Effective prevention and response programming is essential to protect survivors, reduce risks, and address the root causes of violence. This course provides participants with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills to design, manage, and evaluate GBV prevention and response programmes across diverse contexts.

GBV occurs in multiple forms including physical, sexual, psychological, economic, and harmful traditional practices, and is often exacerbated during conflict, displacement, and emergencies. Survivors frequently face stigma, limited access to services, and weak protection systems. This training equips participants with survivor-centered approaches to ensure dignity, confidentiality, safety, and respect in all aspects of GBV programming.

Many organizations struggle with weak GBV programming systems, insufficient referral pathways, limited coordination between service providers, and inadequate survivor support mechanisms. These gaps often reduce the effectiveness of interventions and increase risks for affected populations. This course addresses these challenges by strengthening programme design, coordination, monitoring, and accountability systems for GBV prevention and response.

Effective GBV programming requires multi-sectoral coordination involving health, psychosocial support, legal aid, protection services, and community-based structures. Without integrated systems, survivors are unable to access comprehensive care and justice. This course provides participants with frameworks for building coordinated GBV response systems that ensure seamless service delivery and strengthened protection outcomes.

Prevention of GBV is equally important as response and requires addressing harmful social norms, power imbalances, and structural inequalities. This training explores community engagement strategies, behavior change communication, and advocacy approaches aimed at preventing violence before it occurs. Participants will learn how to integrate prevention strategies into broader development and humanitarian programming.

Through case studies, simulations, practical exercises, and real-world humanitarian scenarios, participants will gain hands-on experience in GBV programme management. The course emphasizes survivor-centered approaches, ethical considerations, confidentiality, and protection principles to ensure safe and effective programming in all settings.
