Introduction
The Fundamentals of Investigations Course is designed to provide a solid foundation in the principles, processes, and practices of conducting effective investigations. Whether in the public, private, or non-profit sector, investigations play a crucial role in uncovering facts, establishing accountability, and supporting justice, compliance, or organizational integrity. This course equips participants with essential skills to conduct thorough, lawful, and impartial investigations in a range of professional contexts.
Participants will explore the full investigative process, from planning and case intake to evidence collection, interviewing, analysis, and reporting. Emphasis is placed on adherence to legal and ethical standards, ensuring that every step of the investigation respects due process, human rights, and procedural fairness. Learners will understand how to build credible, well-documented cases that can withstand scrutiny in administrative, legal, or disciplinary forums.
The course incorporates key investigative techniques such as evidence handling, digital forensics, surveillance, and background checks. Participants will also gain hands-on experience in interviewing witnesses and subjects, recognizing deception, and writing clear and defensible investigative reports. Realistic case studies and scenario-based exercises are used to reinforce critical thinking and practical decision-making.
Emerging trends in investigations, including the use of technology, open-source intelligence (OSINT), and trauma-informed approaches, are addressed to ensure participants remain effective in today’s evolving investigative landscape. The course also highlights the importance of safeguarding whistleblowers, maintaining confidentiality, and managing investigation-related risks such as retaliation or reputational harm.
