Course Introduction

Fraud risk management is a critical component of effective governance, internal control, and assurance because fraud can undermine financial performance, operational effectiveness, regulatory compliance, organisational reputation, and stakeholder confidence. This course provides auditors with a structured framework for evaluating how organisations identify, assess, prevent, detect, investigate, respond to, and monitor fraud risks. Participants will learn how to assess fraud risk management maturity while maintaining the independent assurance role of internal audit.

Effective fraud risk management requires organisations to understand where fraud could occur, how existing controls may be circumvented, and which circumstances could increase exposure to fraudulent behaviour. The programme enables auditors to examine fraud risks across financial, operational, procurement, revenue, payroll, treasury, technology, third-party, and strategic processes. Participants will develop practical approaches for assessing fraud schemes, control vulnerabilities, fraud indicators, management responses, and residual exposure.

The course places particular emphasis on the auditor’s role in fraud risk assessment and assurance. Participants will learn how to distinguish management’s responsibility for preventing and detecting fraud from internal audit’s responsibility to provide independent assurance over the effectiveness of fraud risk management processes. The programme examines how auditors can evaluate fraud risk assessments, test relevant controls, analyse fraud indicators, review monitoring activities, assess investigations, and communicate significant weaknesses without assuming operational ownership.

A major component of the programme is the integration of fraud risk management with risk-based internal auditing. Participants will explore how fraud risks should influence audit universe development, engagement selection, audit planning, scope determination, testing strategies, sampling, data analytics, evidence evaluation, and reporting. The course also examines how fraud risk information from whistleblowing channels, investigations, incidents, control failures, previous audits, management monitoring, and external intelligence can strengthen audit risk assessments.

Technology is transforming both fraud risks and fraud detection capabilities. Digital payments, cloud systems, automated processes, artificial intelligence, synthetic identities, cyber-enabled fraud, data manipulation, cryptocurrency-related activity, and complex third-party ecosystems create new challenges for auditors. The programme incorporates these emerging issues and examines how data analytics, continuous monitoring, automated controls testing, artificial intelligence-assisted analysis, and transaction surveillance can support fraud risk assurance while recognising data quality, validation, and human oversight requirements.

By the end of the programme, participants will be able to evaluate fraud risk management frameworks, develop fraud-focused audit procedures, assess preventive and detective controls, analyse fraud indicators, review investigations, evaluate remediation, and report fraud risk exposures effectively. Practical exercises, fraud-risk scenarios, control assessment activities, analytical case studies, and audit planning exercises will help participants translate the concepts into a disciplined and repeatable approach for providing meaningful fraud risk assurance.
