Course Introduction

Forests generate complex and continuously changing datasets covering forest extent, tree species, biomass, carbon, growth, productivity, land cover, biodiversity, disturbances, forest health, harvesting, restoration, ownership, ecosystem services, and socioeconomic conditions. The Forestry Data Analytics and Resource Monitoring Training Course provides a practical framework for transforming these diverse datasets into reliable information for forest management, conservation, planning, investment, climate programmes, restoration initiatives, and resource monitoring. Modern forest assessment increasingly combines field inventories with remote sensing, geospatial analysis, and digital data systems to understand forest condition and change across different spatial and temporal scales. FAO’s Global Forest Resources Assessment 2025 evaluates forest resources, condition, management, and uses over the 1990–2025 period and provides a major global reference framework for forest-resource monitoring.

Effective forestry analytics requires integration of ground observations with spatial and remotely sensed information rather than reliance on isolated inventory tables. Participants learn how to work with forest inventory plots, tree measurements, stand characteristics, species information, land-cover classifications, satellite observations, aerial surveys, disturbance records, climate variables, and management data. The US Forest Service, for example, combines inventory data with remote sensing and geospatial datasets to identify forest status and trends and to monitor land-use change and disturbances. This course therefore emphasizes analytical methods that connect plot-level measurements with landscape-scale information while maintaining data quality, traceability, consistent definitions, and appropriate statistical interpretation.

A central component of the programme is forest inventory analytics. Participants examine measurements such as diameter, height, species, tree density, basal area, volume, biomass, growth, mortality, regeneration, stocking, stand structure, and productivity. They learn how to calculate and interpret forest-resource indicators and how to compare inventory observations across locations, forest types, management units, and time periods. Current forest inventory programmes demonstrate the value of standardized field procedures and structured databases for producing comparable and repeatable resource information; the US Forest Service's current nationwide inventory guidance, for example, specifies consistent field standards, codes, methods, and definitions.

Remote sensing and geospatial intelligence provide another major pillar of modern resource monitoring. Satellite imagery, aerial surveys, GIS layers, historical imagery, and other spatial datasets can support forest-area estimation, land-cover mapping, disturbance detection, forest-health monitoring, restoration assessment, and change analysis. FAO's forest-monitoring work combines remote sensing with national reporting and cloud-based analytical capabilities, while its remote-sensing surveys are designed to generate consistent estimates of forest area and forest-area change across regions and ecological zones. Participants learn how to combine these technologies with field data rather than treating remote sensing as a replacement for ground-based information.

The course also addresses forest health, climate, carbon, biodiversity, wildfire, pests, diseases, degradation, deforestation, restoration, and other resource-management challenges. Modern forest inventories increasingly support analysis beyond timber, including carbon, biomass, ecosystem services, biodiversity, land-use change, invasive species, and wildfire impacts. The US Forest Service's inventory and monitoring programmes illustrate this broader resource perspective by integrating forest data with information about carbon, wildlife, biodiversity, water, forest products, ecosystem services, and disturbance. Participants therefore develop a multidimensional analytical perspective capable of supporting both production-oriented forestry and wider ecosystem-management objectives.

Throughout the five-day programme, participants progress from forestry data foundations through inventory analytics, data quality, spatial analysis, remote sensing, forest-health monitoring, carbon and biomass intelligence, disturbance analysis, forecasting, dashboards, and management decision support. The final capstone integrates field inventory, geospatial, environmental, operational, and resource data into a practical forest-monitoring solution. The objective is to help professionals move beyond static reporting toward continuous, evidence-based resource intelligence that can identify changes, explain patterns, prioritize interventions, communicate risks, and support sustainable forest-management decisions.
