Course Introduction

Food security, livelihoods, and economic recovery programming are central pillars in humanitarian and development response, particularly in contexts affected by conflict, climate shocks, economic instability, and displacement. This course equips participants with advanced knowledge and practical skills to design, implement, and manage integrated programmes that enhance food access, strengthen livelihoods, and promote sustainable economic recovery for vulnerable populations.

Across many regions, millions of people face chronic food insecurity driven by poverty, climate variability, market disruptions, and weak production systems. Livelihood systems are often fragile and easily disrupted by shocks, leaving communities without stable income sources. This training provides participants with tools to analyze food systems, identify livelihood gaps, and design effective recovery interventions.

Humanitarian and development organizations are increasingly expected to move beyond short-term relief and focus on resilience-building and sustainable economic recovery. However, many programmes lack integrated approaches that connect food security, livelihoods, and market systems development. This course addresses these gaps by introducing holistic frameworks for recovery programming.

Effective food security programming requires understanding agricultural systems, value chains, market access, and socio-economic dynamics. It also requires coordination between governments, NGOs, private sector actors, and communities. Participants will learn how to design multi-sectoral interventions that strengthen production, improve market linkages, and enhance household resilience.

Livelihood recovery is not only about income generation but also about restoring dignity, agency, and self-reliance among affected populations. This course emphasizes inclusive approaches that support women, youth, and marginalized groups in accessing economic opportunities and rebuilding sustainable livelihoods after crises.

Through case studies, simulations, and practical field scenarios, participants will gain hands-on experience in designing and managing food security and livelihood programmes. The course bridges theory and practice, ensuring participants can apply tools and frameworks in real-world humanitarian and development settings.
