Course Introduction

Fixed assets and inventory represent significant areas of organisational resources and can materially affect financial reporting, operational performance, capital planning, and accountability. The Fixed Assets and Inventory Auditing Training Course provides a comprehensive framework for evaluating the governance, controls, records, valuation, existence, completeness, utilisation, safeguarding, and disposal of physical resources across their full lifecycle.

The course examines the complete fixed asset lifecycle, beginning with capital planning, acquisition, procurement, receiving, recognition, classification, and asset registration. Participants will develop practical skills for auditing additions, transfers, depreciation, impairment, maintenance, physical verification, revaluation, disposals, and asset retirement while assessing whether accounting records accurately reflect assets owned, controlled, or used by the organisation.

Inventory auditing is addressed through a similarly integrated approach covering purchasing, receiving, storage, stock records, issuance, consumption, transfers, counts, valuation, obsolete items, damaged goods, and disposals. Participants will explore how weaknesses in warehouse controls, segregation of duties, stock records, authorisation, physical security, and reconciliation can contribute to losses, misstatements, operational disruption, and fraudulent activity.

Strong emphasis is placed on audit evidence and physical verification techniques. Participants will learn how to reconcile fixed asset registers and inventory records to accounting systems and physical locations, design risk-based sampling approaches, investigate discrepancies, assess valuation issues, and document audit conclusions. Practical techniques for identifying duplicate records, missing assets, obsolete inventory, unauthorised disposals, unusual movements, and other control exceptions will be integrated throughout the programme.

Modern asset and inventory environments increasingly rely on enterprise resource planning platforms, barcode systems, RFID, warehouse management applications, mobile devices, automated stock controls, cloud systems, and data analytics. The course therefore incorporates technology-enabled auditing, asset-tracking systems, inventory analytics, continuous monitoring, cybersecurity considerations, master-data governance, and emerging technologies that can strengthen visibility and accountability over physical resources.

By the end of the programme, participants will be able to plan and conduct risk-based fixed asset and inventory audits, evaluate internal controls, perform physical verification, assess accounting and valuation practices, detect potential fraud and operational losses, analyse asset and inventory data, develop evidence-based findings, and recommend sustainable improvements. The programme is designed to strengthen stewardship, financial reporting reliability, operational efficiency, and accountability throughout the asset and inventory lifecycle.
