Introduction

The Financial Management for Program Staff Course is designed to build the financial literacy and confidence of program professionals who play a vital role in implementing and managing development projects. While financial management is often viewed as the responsibility of accountants or finance officers, effective program delivery requires that program staff also understand and engage with financial information. This course bridges that gap by demystifying financial concepts and providing tools to support program success.

Participants will learn the fundamentals of budgeting, financial reporting, cost control, and compliance in the context of program implementation. Emphasis is placed on understanding how program decisions impact financial outcomes and how financial data can support evidence-based planning, monitoring, and reporting. The course will also highlight best practices for working with finance teams and donors to ensure transparency and accountability.

Using interactive exercises, case studies, and real-world scenarios, the course promotes practical application of financial principles in day-to-day program work. Whether managing grants, overseeing procurements, or tracking expenditures, program staff will develop the skills needed to align programmatic goals with financial realities. Participants will leave the course with a toolkit of resources to enhance efficiency, support compliance, and strengthen program outcomes.

This course is ideal for program managers, coordinators, and officers working in NGOs, government agencies, or donor-funded projects who are responsible for managing activities with financial components. No prior background in finance is required—just a commitment to learning and a desire to improve program impact through sound financial management.
