Course Introduction

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) remains a deeply rooted harmful practice affecting millions of girls and women worldwide, with significant physical, psychological, and social consequences. This Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) Eradication Strategies and Community Transformation Training Course equips participants with advanced knowledge, culturally sensitive approaches, and practical tools needed to prevent FGM and protect at-risk populations while respecting community dynamics.

The course examines the complex social, cultural, religious, and economic drivers that sustain FGM, including gender inequality, social norms, rites of passage, and misconceptions about health and morality. Participants will gain insights into how these factors intersect with poverty, education gaps, and power structures, enabling them to design interventions that address root causes rather than symptoms.

A strong emphasis is placed on human rights–based and survivor-centered approaches that prioritize dignity, safety, and empowerment. Participants will explore international conventions, national laws, and regional commitments aimed at eliminating FGM, while learning how to translate policy frameworks into effective local action through coordinated multi-sectoral responses.

Community engagement is a central pillar of the course, highlighting strategies for working with traditional leaders, religious authorities, women’s groups, youth, and men to shift harmful norms. Evidence-based behavior change communication, participatory dialogue methods, and culturally appropriate advocacy techniques are explored to ensure sustainable transformation rather than external imposition.

The training also addresses the health and psychosocial consequences of FGM, equipping healthcare providers, counselors, and social workers with the skills to deliver compassionate care and appropriate referrals. Legal and protection mechanisms are examined to strengthen prevention, reporting, and enforcement while minimizing risks of stigmatization or retaliation against survivors.

Through case studies, scenario simulations, and action planning exercises, participants will develop comprehensive eradication strategies tailored to their institutional or community contexts. The course ultimately prepares leaders to coordinate prevention efforts, strengthen protective systems, and champion long-term social change toward the complete abandonment of FGM.
